The article explores the issue of the formation, status, and significance of the Jewish community in China, encountered by Jesuits, pending their missionary activities in the early modern period. The primary research reference is drawn from the account of the Polish Jesuit Tomasz Szpot Dunin in his work Historiae Sinarum Imperii. The study focuses on the encounters of Jesuit missionaries with various ethnic and national groups in China during the 16th and 17th centuries. The author recounts the origins of the Jewish community, presumably arriving in China in the early Middle Ages, by sea route, along with Muslim traders, their settlement in major urban centers, and integration with Chinese society. The article is supplemented with excerpts from Matteo Ricci’s account of his meeting with a representative of the Jewish community from the city of Kaifeng, as presented in Tomasz Szpot Dunin’s analyzed work.

W artykule poruszona jest kwestia powstania, statusu i znaczenia społeczności żydowskiej w Chinach, z którą zetknęli się w czasie swojej działalności w epoce nowożytnej misjonarze jezuiccy. Główny materiał badawczy zaczerpnięty został z relacji polskiego jezuity Tomasza Szpota Dunina w jego dziele Historiae Sinarum Imperii. Tekst koncentruje się na spotkaniach jezuickich misjonarzy z różnymi grupami etnicznymi i narodowymi w Chinach XVI i XVII w. Autor opisał pochodzenie społeczności żydowskiej, przypuszczalnie przybyłej do Chin na początku wieków średnich drogą morską wraz z muzułmańskimi handlarzami, ich osiedlenie się w dużych ośrodkach miejskich oraz integrację z chińskim społeczeństwem. Treść artykułu uzupełniona została o fragment relacji Matteo Ricciego ze spotkania z przedstawicielem społeczności żydowskiej z miasta Kaifeng, która została przedstawiona w analizowanym dziele Tomasza Szpota.
