W artykule rozważana jest problematyka kształtowania się narodu meksykańskiego. Tłem dla rozważań stał się schematyczny przegląd historii Meksyku. Dla ukształtowania się poczucia tożsamości zbiorowej ważne wskazanie jest niektórych charakterystycznych zjawisk, mających swój udział w tym procesie. Świadomość, że grupę etniczną tworzą jednostki o podobnych cechach fizycznych, wspólnej przeszłości i zamieszkujące to samo terytorium od zamierzchłych czasów, są elementami, które jednoczą jego mieszkańców.
