Equivalence and transfer as examples of current translation techniques

The article provides a brief account of select translation techniques currently used, with special emphasis placed on equivalence and transfer. Various types of techniques are discussed, including some controversies related to their definitions. Resulting from this overview, a new definition of a translation technique is proposed, and the characteristics, applications and mechanisms of the equivalent and transfer are presented. When considering the phenomenon of translation techniques, it is necessary to clearly indicate how they differ from the translation procedure (and/or translation strategy), as well as to indicate what role the techniques play in the translator’s work. While they are certainly not a panacea for all translation problems, they can be useful tools that help avoid certain errors in the translation process.

Artykuł zawiera omówienie wybranych, stosowanych współcześnie technik tłumaczeniowych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ekwiwalentu i transferu. Przedstawiono różne rodzaje technik, uwzględniając przy tym pewne kontrowersje związane z ich definicjami. W wyniku dokonanego przeglądu zaproponowano autorską definicję techniki tłumaczeniowej oraz przedstawiono cechy, zastosowania i mechanizmy działania ekwiwalentu i transferu. Rozważając zjawisko technik tłumaczeniowych należy jasno wskazać, czym różnią się one od procedury tłumaczeniowej (i/lub strategii tłumaczeniowej), a także wskazać, jaką rolę odgrywają te techniki w pracy tłumacza. Choć z pewnością nie są one panaceum na wszystkie problemy związane z tłumaczeniem, mogą być przydatnymi narzędziami, które pomogą uniknąć pewnych błędów w procesie tłumaczenia.
