A comparative study of textbooks for German as a foreign language: focus on various aspects of culture

How much culture and what kind of culture should textbooks for German as a foreign language offer? The answer can be found in the document from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education – in the framework curriculum for secondary school education in Poland – students should learn both the cultural content that is associated with everyday life, as well as the content of high culture. This should form a basis for intercultural reflection and thus for the development of communicative competence among the learners. How much culture and what kind of culture do selected textbooks for German as a foreign language (approved for the 2022/23 school year) actually offer? This article presents the results of a qualitative analysis of selected textbooks. The differences between the textbooks examined concern both the amount of cultural content presented and the emphasis in the presentation of individual topics. The topics of high culture are underrepresented in the textbooks analysed.

Wie viel Kultur und welche Kultur sollten Lehrwerke für Deutsch als Fremdsprache bieten? Die Antwort findet man im Dokument des Ministeriums für Wissenschaft und Hochschulbildung – im Rahmenlehrplan für den oberschulischen Unterricht in Polen – die Schüler sollten sowohl die Kulturinhalte, die mit dem Alltag verbunden sind, als auch Inhalte der hohen Kultur kennen lernen. Dies soll eine Basis für die interkulturelle Reflexion und damit für die Entwicklung der kommunikativen Kompetenz bei den Lernenden bilden. Wie viel Kultur und welche Kultur bieten ausgewählte Lehrwerke für DaF (zugelassen für das Schuljahr 2022/23) in Wirklichkeit? Im vorliegenden Artikel wurden Ergebnisse einer qualitativen Analyse ausgewählter Lehrwerke dargestellt. Die Unterschiede zwischen den untersuchten Lehrwerken betreffen sowohl die Menge an dargestellten Kulturinhalten, als auch die Akzentsetzungen bei der Präsentation einzelner Themen. Die Themen der hohen Kultur sind in den analysierten Lehrwerken unterrepräsentiert.
