In 1991 in Warsaw, on Stoczkowska Street (in the neighbourhood of Szembek Square), a hoard of coins was found which later was partly dispersed. Part of the hoard (851 coins and 2 fragments of ceramics) was purchased by the Royal Castle in Warsaw and is kept in its Numismatic Cabinet. The finding is consisted chiefly of 'polturas' from the third decade of the 17th century, primarily crown coins with an admixture of Prussian, Elbląg as well as Riga coins. Smaller denomination coins are represented by only a dozen or so pieces of different schillings as well as groschen and also two ternars of Poznań and Łobżenica. The hoard comprises also coins of higher denomination, first of all three-groschen coins, six-groschen ones and several orts. The thaler coins have a western provenience (chiefly Netherlands and also Bohemia, Saxony and Switzerland). The oldest coin in the deposit from Grochów is a Bohemian half-thaler of Rudolph II (1576---1612) from 1611 and the youngest - Gelders lion thaler dates back to 1641. The deposit from Warsaw-Grochów is a typical hoard from before the middle of the 17th century. Its structure is very similar to the composition of analogous hoards from this period - Złota, Leopoldowo or Pęchratka Polska. The domination of 'poltura' (one and a half groschen) coins which were then popular is noticeable.
