FIGURE AND GROUND: PARALLELS BETWEEN PERCEPTION OF VISUAL AND TEXTUAL INFORMATION Summary This contribution is based on an assumption that there is a correlation between the perceptual criteria that determine the spatial organization of the visual fi eld into fi gure and ground (as proposed by the gestalt theory) and those that determine the foreground-background distinction in texts. We will show that the usage of this fi gure-versus-ground theory can be effective in a research of comprehension of humanistic texts in inter-cultural communication. Many of cultural differences that were already discovered in the compositional and semantic structure of humanistic text - i.e. principals of its progression, paragraph structure, citation - may be a result of different strategies in construction of foreground and background. FIGURA I TŁO: PARALELE W PERCEPCJI INFORMACJI WIZUALNEJ I TEKSTOWEJ Streszczenie Artykuł ten opiera się na założeniu, że istnieje korelacja pomiędzy kryteriami percepcyjnymi, determinującymi organizację przestrzenną pola wizualnego jako fi gura i tło (zaproponowaną w teorii gestaltu), a tymi, które determinują w tekstach rozróżnienie na pierwszy i drugi plan. Ukażemy, iż zastosowanie teorii fi gura-tło może okazać się efektywne w badaniach nad zrozumieniem tekstów humanistycznych w komunikacji międzykulturowej. Wiele odkrytych do tej pory różnic kulturowych obserwowanych w kompozycyjnej oraz semantycznej strukturze tekstu humanistycznego – tj. czynniki jego rozwoju, struktura podziału, cytaty - mogą być wynikiem różnych strategii konstruowania pierwszego i drugiego planu.
