W 1988 roku na łamach lewicowego dziennika „L’Unità” pisarka Natalia Ginzburg, ateistka żydowskiego pochodzenia, zaangażowana po stronie włoskiej lewicy, zabiera głos w obronie krzyża zawieszonego w szkolnych klasach. W eseju zatytułowanym Non togliete questa croce: è il segno del dolore umano (Nie zdejmujecie tego krzyża: jest symbolem ludzkiego cierpienia) odnosi się do ponadreligijnego i ponadideologicznego znaczenia tego symbolu. Przypomina, że to właśnie rewolucji chrześcijańskiej ludzkość zawdzięcza idee równości i solidarności, wcześniej nieobecne. Przywołuje katalog wartości, takich jak między innymi tolerancja i szczodrość polegająca na pozostawieniu drugiemu człowiekowi wolności w poszukiwaniach odpowiedzi na fundamentalne pytania. Jakie przesłanki zadecydowały o tym, że pisarka postanowiła interweniować w sprawie krzyża? W jaki sposób obrona chrześcijańskiego symbolu w publicznej przestrzeni wpisuje się w intelektualny projekt, który konsekwentnie rozwijała od momentu literackiego debiutu? Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na te dwa zasadnicze pytania. Ponadto proponuje polskie tłumaczenie jednego ze słynnych tekstów Ginzburg, której doskonała eseistyka pozostaje w Polsce praktycznie nieznana

„This cross represents us all“. Liberty and solidarity in Natalia Ginzburg's essays In 1988, in the pages of the left-wing daily „L'Unità”, the writer Natalia Ginzburg, an atheist of Jewish origin, involved on the side of the Italian left, speaks in defense of the presence of the crosses in classrooms. In an essay entitled Non togliete questa croce: è il segno del dolore umano, she refers to the supra-religious and supra-ideological meaning of this symbol. It reminds that it is the Christian revolution that humanity owes to the ideas of equality and solidarity, previously absent. Ginzburg recalls a catalog of values, such as tolerance and generosity, which consists in leaving another human being freedom in searching for answers to fundamental questions. What were the reasons why the writer decided to intervene in the matter of the cross? How does the defense of the Christian symbol in public space fit in with the intellectual project that she has been consistently developing since her literary debut? The article aims at answering these two fundamental questions. Moreover, it ofers a Polish translation of one of the famous texts by Ginzburg, whose excellent essays remain practically unknown in Poland.
