Günter Grass’s literary output, his political involvement, and the function of the conscience of the nation assigned to him, until today have been the subject of numerous debates and academic analyzes, resulting in a lot of controversies. He was accused of politicizing, pornography and even demoralization. After confessing ‘I was in the Waffen-SS’ there came an attempt at rebuilding his moral authority, with a repeated emphasis that after the criticism of the Nazi regime Grass should have reflected on his past.

Günter Grass. Koniec moralnej instancji albo „sparzone dziecko“ swojego czasu? Twórczość literacka Güntera Grassa, jego polityczne zaangażowanie oraz przypisywana mu funkcja sumienia narodu do dzisiaj są przedmiotem licznych debat oraz naukowych analiz, wywołując przy tym wiele kontrowersji. Zarzucano mu upolitycznianie, pornografię a nawet demoralizację. Po wyznaniu „Byłem w Waffen-SS” próbowano odbudować autorytet moralny pisarza, podkreślając niejednokrotnie, że tuż za krytyką reżimu nazistowskiego powinna była pójść ze strony pisarza refleksja o własnej przeszłości.
