Zburzenie Warszawy w 1944 roku Małgorzata Baranowska skojarzyła ze zniszczeniem Kartaginy. W atmosferze klęski stanu wojennego w kręgu uczniów i współpracowników Marii Janion zrodził się pomysł, by z tej perspektywy pokazać Warszawę i Polskę Grassowi. Nic z tego nie wyszło. Grass nie dotarł do naszej Kartaginy. Jego Kartaginą pozostało unicestwione przez hitlerowców Wolne Miasto. Jednak dawny już pomysł Janion, by czytać Grassa jako „brakujące ogniwo polskiej literatury” nie uległ przedawnieniu. Grassowski sposób narracji otwiera wciąż dla nas ważną możliwość cywilnego – prywatnego i egzystencjalnego postrzegania historii.

Die Zerstörung Warschaus im Jahre 1944 wurde von Małgorzata Baranowska mit der Vernichtung von Karthago assoziiert. Unter der verheerenden Stimmung des Kriegsrechts einigten sich die Schüler und Mitarbeiter von Maria Janion auf den Vorschlag, aus dieser Perspektive Günter Grass Warschau und Polen zu zeigen. Dies gelang nicht. Grass kam nicht in unser Karthago. Sein Karthago blieb die durch die Nazis ausgelöschte Freie Stadt Danzig. Der frühere Vorschlag von Janion, Grass als „das fehlende Kettenglied der polnischen Literatur“ zu lesen, ist jedoch nicht überholt. Die Grass’sche Erzählweise eröffnet die für uns noch immer gewichtige Möglichkeit, die Geschichte zivil – privat und existentiell – zu betrachten.

Małgorzata Baranowska linked the completely destruction of Warsaw in 1944 to the destruction of Carthage. In the atmosphere of calamity brought about by the martial law in Poland (introduced in 1981), the circle of Maria Janion’s disciples and colleagues came up with the idea to show Günter Grass Warsaw and Poland from this perspective. The idea failed, since Grass did not manage to reach our Carthage. The Free City of Danzig, annihilated by the Nazis, has remained his Carthage. Yet Maria Janion’s old idea to read Grass as ‘the missing link of Polish literature’ has not become obsolete. Grass’s way of narration still opens up a possibility, important for us, of a civil – private and existential perception of history.
