Esej ma za przedmiot szczególną rolę, jaką w dziele Güntera Grassa odgrywają Kaszuby i Kaszubi. Główna teza brzmi, że historia tego małego narodu stanowi humanistyczną przeciwwagę dla zbrodniczej historii otaczających Kaszubów „wielkich narodów”, Niemców i Polaków.
