Selbst die avanciertesten Analysen des Essays/Essayismus sind weder in der Lage den Essay als Genre noch den Essayismus als Methode klar abgegrenzt zu definieren. Mit dekonstruktiven Theorien, allen voran Jacques Derridas „Das Gesetz der Gattung“, werde ich zeigen, dass es nicht nur unmöglich ist, den Essay/Essayismus zu definieren, sondern dass darüber hinaus diese Unmöglichkeit gerade konstitutiv für seine Definition ist. Den Essay, wie jede Gattung, zu definieren, bedeutet, immer schon zugleich diese Definition zu dekonstruieren. Darum schlage ich vor, bei einer Beschreibung des Essays diese immer ‚nur‘ als kontextuale, prozesshafte, momentan gültige zu verstehen.

Even the most elaborated analysis regarding the essay and/respectively essayism is not able to define the genre/the method in a well-defined manner. Using deconstructive theories, first of all Jacques Derridas “The Law of Genre” I will show that the essay/essayism is not only refusing to be characterized. Even more its indefinability is a structural necessity of its definition. To define the essay – as to define any genre – always includes to deconstruct the definition at the same moment. Thus I propose to characterize the essay in a contextual, processual and always only temporarily valid way.
