Dieser Beitrag betrifft Gedichte, die Helga M. Novak in den 1960er Jahren in Palermo verfasste: Monreale, palermitanisches Lied, Palermo sowie die Erzählung Sizilianische Vesper in Briefen und das Kapitel VII „Lebendfänger“ ihres Romans Im Schwanenhals. Expressionistisch beschreibt sie die schwierige Lage der Bewohner Palermos, insbesondere der Kinder, denen sie sich nahe fühlte. Die Stadt ist von Dekadenz, Armut und Not gekennzeichnet, in ihr herrschen die sizilianische Mafia und die Kirche. Novaks Italien ist kein Ort, der fasziniert bzw. durch das Prisma des „Südkomplexes“ deutscher Reisender wahrgenommen wird.

The article refers to the works written by Helga M. Novak in Palermo in the 60s: the three poems Monreale, palermitanisches Lied, Palermo, the short story Sizilianische Vesper in Briefen and chapter VII „Lebendfänger“ of the novel Im Schwanenhals. The poet describes the inhuman conditions in which people live, especially children, who the poet feels close to. The city is characterized by poverty, decay, and privation. The Sicilian Mafia and the Church dominate. According to Novak’s vision, Italy is not a charming place, known as „Südkomplex“, but it is the place of corruption and exploitation. Poetry becomes real human experience.
