W artykule zawarte są refleksje Autora na temat książki The Enterprising University. Reform, Excellence and Equity  (Open University Press, Buckingham 2003). Zbiór tekstów zebranych i opracowanych przez czołowego brytyjskiego badacza problemów szkolnictwa wyższego - Garetha Williamsa - wpisuje się w nurt dyskusji na temat przyszłości uniwersytetu, jego kształtu, funkcji oraz wzorów działania. Książka, zawierająca czternaście opracowań autorów związanych ze szkolnictwem wyższym, poświęcona jest wieloaspektowej analizie procesu urynkowienia uniwersytetów w Wielkiej Brytanii i krajach Commonwealthu. Autorzy opracowań zawartych w pierwszej części tomu podejmują próbę diagnozy sytuacji szkolnictwa wyższego w Wielkiej Brytanii w perspektywie równoległych procesów upowszechnienia studiów wyższych oraz stopniowego ograniczania środków publicznych przeznaczanych na szkolnictwo akademickie. Część druga jest poświęcona zmianom w organizacji i zarządzaniu instytucji akademickich, które znajdują się w centrum procesu liberalizacji szkolnictwa wyższego. Autor recenzji zwraca szczególną uwagę na nowe formy współpracy między szkołami wyższymi a sektorem przedsiębiorstw, a także na zagrożenia rozwoju uniwersytetu wynikające z urynkowienia instytucji akademickich oraz na konieczność redefinicji roli uczonego.

This article contains the author’s reflections about the book The Enterprising University. Reform, Excellence and Equity.  A set of articles gathered and edited by Gareth Williams, a leading British researcher into problems with higher education, is incorporated into the body of a discussion on the future of universities, their shape, functions and models of activity. The first part of the book is an attempt to diagnose the situation with higher education in the United Kingdom and in the Commonwealth in the face of a parallel propagation of higher education and a gradual reduction in public spending on academic education. The second part is entirely devoted to changes in the organisation and management of the higher education institutions which lie at the centre of the processes of liberalisation of higher education. In his review the author pays special attention to the higher education institutions cooperating with the sector of enterprises, as well to threats to the development of the universities as a result of a process of their commercialisation, and to the necessity to redefine the role of scientist.
