In July 2022, after a two-year delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Catholic Church in Australia concluded her Fifth Plenary Council, convened almost a century after the last Plenary Council in 1937. Unlike the Council of 1937, the topics of the work of the latest Plenary Council were the fruit of community and personal considerations undertaken by Australians. From the first preparations for the Council, the hierarchy and faithful of the Catholic Church in Australia controlled its subject and course. It was an ecclesial experience shaped by Australian conditions and aimed at searching for answers to continuing the mission of the Church in Australia in the 21st century. Since the Council Decrees are still awaiting approval by the Holy See, and as such do not have legal force, the author of this article analyses the work of the Council through the lenses of the kerygma contained in the exhortation Evangelii Gaudium in order to show the lived experience of kerygma in Australian realities, which was articulated in the work of the Fifth Plenary Council of Australia.
