The article tries to deal with the idea of myth in the literary output of Olga Tokarczuk. The author examines the way it functions; its deep roots settled in the mystery as well as specific numerous repetitions. Tokarczuk also distinguishes three major motives, within which the interpretation of her prose takes place. These are home, a book and a fact of setting reality in the myth. The first one is understood as a portrait of an inhabitant who characterises it (Day Home, Night Home). The second one is regarded as a magic place, built of words, where everything begins. It is, then, "a spiritual heritage" and a symbol of the entire universe, which becomes for a common reader a postulate to fulfill (Journey of the People of the Book). However, placing reality in the myth means turning the world into a better, peaceful one. It also leads to creation of imaginary worlds that live their own lives and enchant us with the beauty of their things (Journey of the People of the Book, E.E., Timesville and other Ages, Day Home, Night Home, The Wardrobe). The article tells us also a few words about the writing by Olga Tokarczuk, who combines in her prose the myth with the origins. By means of that, she shows to the reader ambitious directions. By the motive of way, a book or home, the writer reaches to the tradition deserving an intellectual homo legens, i.e. a human who can read. The motives also become a save and well considered escape, which protects us from depression we can be infected with, living in an insane world rushing towards annihilation.
