In the article the author introduced his own classification and a measurement method for costs and benefits of payment instruments from the perspective of four main parties in the payment chain - the central bank, commercial banks, merchants and consumers. The proposed theoretical framework of the research could be applied to the analysis of payment instruments in Poland. Attempts have already been made by the author alone and together with the research team. However, due to the wide range of research, its high cost and the reluctance of institutions to disclose sensitive data, a comprehensive analysis failed to be accomplished. On the other hand, the author successfully completed studies on a more narrow scale, which facilitated better understanding of issues related to payment instruments in Poland (including costs).

W artykule przedstawiono autorski podział i metodę pomiaru kosztów i korzyści instrumentów płatniczych w przekroju czterech głównych podmiotów łańcucha płatności - banku centralnego, banków komercyjnych, punktów handlowo-usługowych i konsumentów. Zaproponowaną teoretyczną koncepcję badania można by zastosować do analizy instrumentów płatniczych w Polsce.
