The paper defines and analyzes the ideas of scientists and educators late XIX - early XX century., Whose innovative pedagogical searches active in educational activities significantly enriched the national pedagogical theory and practice. The main attention is paid to professional self-education teacher, his moral character. It is proved that the created image of the teacher has not lost relevance today J. Chipiga, A. Duhnovicha, S. Myropolskoho, М. Dragomanov, A. Muzichenko, T. Lubentsya, J. Korczak on the role of self-education in shaping the personality of the teacher.
