EN

Rituals emphasized exceptional position of Congo rulers. The adoption of Christianity did not eliminate traditional customs, beliefs but transformed some of them. Rulers and Catholic priests made use of rituals to strengthen a new religion in the kingdom of Congo. Thanks to relations with Europe literacy was introduced to Congo. It enabled to conduct correspondence between Congo’s rulers and European courts. The literacy was also a mean of communication in state administration beside traditional ways.
