The records of the parishes which became part of the diocese of Łódź, established on 10 December 1920 by Pope Benedict XV, were the first documents stored in the Diocesan Archive in Łódź. On 3 September 1921,Rev. Dr Jan Bączek, authorised by Bishop Wincenty Tymieniecki, took over 119 archival units concerning the parishes mentioned above and 100 personal files from the Metropolitan Curia of Warsaw. The first archivist of the Diocesan Archive was Rev. Jan Frontczak, who was appointed on 7 April 1932 and held this position until 18 March 1961. The first director of the Museum and Archive of the Diocese of Łódź was Rev. Henryk Rybus, appointed by the Ordinary of Łódź, Włodzimierz Jasiński, on 1 November 1937. Bishop Jasiński treated relics and archival materials with great care, which he showed as the Ordinary of Sandomierz when he announced the statute and two sets of rules for the Museum on 21 December 1937, a month after Rev. Rybus was appointed a director. This is a significant date in the history of the Archive and Museum in Łódź. At present, the Archdiocesan Archive in Łódź has five storage rooms, a front office and a research room. The records are held in 101 cabinets, and archival materials are systematically put in acid-free boxes. Currently, there are 1500 linear metres of the records divided into 30 thousand archival units (in addition, 3 thousand archival units are held in the Archive of the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Łódź). The archive also has plans for the future; some of them are urgent while others can be gradually implemented.
