The aim of this paper is to define the term of transcendence in the 20th century Slovak philosophy. Authors of this paper focus on the using of the term in the work of religious and non-religious Slovak philosophers. The understanding of transcendence in the works of C. Dudáš, S. Š. Osuský and S. Štúr will be analyzed. The paper emphasizes that the using of the term transcendence is in Slovak neotomismus used to define the existence of God. Authors claim that the use of the term transcendence should not be limited to the categorical apparatus of contemporary philosophy of 20th century which defines this term in two different way. The first respects the ontological and epistemological attitude to the notion of transcendence. Second is understood as a fictional notion. Similarly as Kant, authors of this paper believe that transcendence is what is beyond the knowledge, some- thing people can doubt and what is the source of critical philosophical thinking.
