Tematem artykułu są specyficzne, performatywne aspekty kultury mieszkańców indonezyjskiej wyspy Sumba, których najważniejszym źródłem jest pierwotna wiara w duchy i bóstwa Marapu, wciąż wyznawana przez znaczną część Sumbańczyków. Fenomenowi wyjątkowej trwałości tradycji, wyrastających z tych animistycznych wierzeń, autorka artykułu przygląda się przez pryzmat unikalnego systemu społecznego i kodeksu wartości, jaki wciąż obowiązuje na wyspie. W artykule przywołane zostają przykłady praktyk kulturowych, świąt i obrzędów sumbańskich, które podtrzymują tradycyjny porządek społeczno-kulturowy poprzez daleko posuniętą teatralizację, ceremonialność i widowiskowość działań wspólnotowych. Autorka wskazuje również na performatywne uwarunkowania materialnych świadectw lokalnej kultury, takich jak charakterystyczne dla wyznawców Marapu megalityczne grobowce lub symbolicznie traktowana przestrzeń i architektura tradycyjnych wsi.

The subject of the article constitutes the specific, performative aspects of the culture of residents of an Indonesian island, Sumba, whose most important source is a primeval belief in ghosts and gods of Marapu, still practiced by a major part of Sumba’s residents. The author of the article looks at the phenomenon of extraordinary permanence of tradition and animistic beliefs originating from it through the unique social system and the code of values still in force on the island. In the article the author refers to Sumba’s cultural practices, holidays and rituals which maintain the traditional social-cultural order though theatrality, rituality and spectacularity of common activities. The author indicates the performative determinants of local culture’s material evidence, such as typical of Marapu believers megalithic tombs or symbolically perceived space and architecture of traditional villages.
