Tematem prezentowanego artykułu jest analiza jednego z profilów językowego obrazu Boga, jakim jest profil Ojca, zawarty w polskich kazaniach katolickich z drugiej połowy XIX w. Prezentowana w kazaniach konceptualizacja Boga jako Ojca jest przede wszystkim związana z biblijną tradycją oraz doktryną religijną, ale uwzględnia też ówczesny kontekst społeczno-kulturowy. W analizie materiału wykorzystuje się kategorie semantyki kognitywnej, w szczególności metodę profilowania. Badane teksty kaznodziejskie różnych autorów ujmowane są jako realizacje wzorca gatunkowego kazania. Autorka koncentruje się na poznawczym wymiarze kazania, który przekazuje określoną wiedzę o rzeczywistości nadprzyrodzonej i Bogu, a ze względu na skomplikowany charakter tego zagadnienia wykorzystuje się w nim konceptualizacje, które ułatwiają odbiorcom zrozumienie wieloaspektowej natury Boga.

The present article investigates one profile of the image of God as is present in the Polish nineteenth-century sermons by various preachers. The analysis exploits the categories of cognitive semantics, especially profiling method, and metaphor. The analysis shows that the conceptual structures are good method used in religious language to expand its limits and to facilitate cognition of Transcendence. The author conceives sermons as genre, which communicates certain knowledge of supernatural reality and God. It is important, that throughout the ages there have been different interpretations of substantive likeness to God. The image of God in the nineteenth-century sermons is not homogeneous. The most important is the fact that different concepts creating His image realize other communication objectives. The presented analysis emphasizes very important profile of the linguistic image of God – God as Father. The profile God as Father underlines His love, care and protection, authority and right to punish people for not living according to the Gods standards. It caused that man is to be afraid of Him even if He is full of mercy. The author pays attention to pragmatic meaning of analyzed profile in old sermons. The image of God created by preachers makes the auditors realize that God is the owner of each member of the human family and that He requires the unrestrictedobedience of all. The presented concepts of God in sermons are in accordance with the biblical tradition and theological doctrine.
