The aim of this study is to attempt to answer questions about the state and perspectives of a national referendum in Hungary in the twenty-first century. Under the constitution of 2011 the principles of direct democracy have gained an unsymmetrical character in the Hungarian legislation in relation to the principles of representative democracy. In particular, the subject of our interest is the so-called migrant quota referendum held on 2nd October 2016. The whole procedure, starting with the referendum question and ending with the accompanying media campaign, indicates the crucial problem of the Hungarian direct democracy treated often as a „plebiscite verifying the popularity of the government”.
