Allergic diseases of the respiratory system (asthma and allergic rhinitis) are the most commonly recognized conditions in children and adolescents. Contemporary research shows that persons in developmental age, suffering from allergies are at risk of developing various disorders in psychosocial functioning. The paper presents the issues of categorial versus non – categorial theoretical approach in the interpretation of chronic diseases in children, dilemmas related to psychological and pedagogical research on children with allergy and an interdisciplinary model of diagnosis and therapy of these children. The article presents both the limitations and the benefits of holistic approach towards children with asthma and allergic rhinitis in the research and diagnosis and therapy processes.

Choroby alergiczne układu oddechowego (astma i alergiczny nieżyt nosa) należą do najczęściej diagnozowanych chorób przewlekłych dzieci i młodzieży. Współczesne badania ujawniają, że osoby w wieku rozwojowym cierpiące na alergię są zagrożone ryzykiem wystąpienia zaburzeń funkcjonowania psychospołecznego. W pracy omówiono zagadnienia kategorialnego versus niekategorialnego podejścia w interpretacji chorób przewlekłych u dzieci, dylematy dotyczące prowadzenia psychologicznych i pedagogicznych badań w populacji dzieci z chorobami alergicznymi układu oddechowego oraz interdyscyplinarny model diagnozy i terapii tychże dzieci. W artykule zaprezentowano zarówno ograniczenia, jak i korzyści przyjęcia holistycznego podejścia w badaniach, diagnozie i terapii dzieci z astmą i alergicznym nieżytem nosa.
