本論では説話ジャンルおよび、研究と体系化を困難にしているその幅広い領域に焦点を当てる。西尾光一氏など日本のわずかな研究者が、説話を定義する本質的な特色を識別しようと試みた。結果、この特異なジャンルを理解する一助となる、簡明で首尾一貫したものとなった。第一の目立った特徴は、説話は口承を起源とする文学であることで、数十年にも渡って伝承され、はっきりとした作家がいないということ。第二に、説話の本質がどうあれ、様々な伝説を集めた形をとる傾向が見られること。その他の説話の特徴としては、文学・音楽・慣習・植物・情事・日常生活といった世俗的な物語から、倫理的教訓のみならず仏教や神道から影響を受けた宗教的な内容のものまで、広範な主題を扱うことなどが挙げられる。  筆者は特に中世の教養ある廷臣、橘成季が著した『古今著聞集』に着目する。これは、神々や鬼、帝、貴族、侍女、騎士、僧侶、村人そして超自然的な性質に結びついた動物など、種々雑多なものからなる特異な説話集として扱われるのにふさわしい。これに加えて、『古今著聞集』は序に続き20巻30篇と適切にまとめられた書物としての一面も持っている。こうした衒学的で演出的な細部は、他の説話集には見られない特徴として注目すべきである。
