The paper discusses the image of Amsterdam in 17th-century Dutch literature, the creation of a myth of a historical city (by seeking parallels to the Aeneid), rapid economic and cultural development of Amsterdam in the 17th  century, and the formation of  a Dutch national and cultural identity after the political division of the low Countries into North and south. the author analyses the works of Gerbrand adriaenszoon Bredero (Spaanschen Brabander Jerolimo) and joost van den Vondel (Gysbreght van Aemstel).
