Nonconceptual Knowledge and Kazimierz Twardowski’s Postulate of the Clarity of the Philosophical Style

The article offers a few remarks on Kazimierz Twardowski’s thesis about the clarity of the philosophical style. The issue is discussed in the context of the problem of nonconceptual thinking and non-propositional knowledge. A short history of the polemic in the Lvov-Warsaw School serves as an introduction to further methodological and epistemological considerations. The main subject of the comment is the work entitled About the Clear and Unclear Philosophical Style by the Polish philosopher. Twardowski’s article remains pertinent to the metaphilosophical discussion concerning the status of philosophical language and-which is overlooked in most studies-to the debate concerning conceptualization and communication at the intersection of epistemology and philosophy of mind and language. The polemic with Twardowski’s thesis that unclear style of philosophical works is indicative of the ambiguity of philosophical thinking, is presented in the three stages. I discuss Twardowski’s thesis that we think with words, and two theses by David Einhorn: that an object which cannot be grasped by concepts, cannot be known at all, and that the only access to thought we have is by means of words.

Artykuł dotyczy Kazimierza Twardowskiego postulatu jasności stylu filozoficznego, w kontekście problematyki myślenia pozapojęciowego i wiedzy niepropozycjonalnej. Syntetycznie zarysowany kontekst historyczny oraz profil Szkoły Lwowsko- Warszawskiej posłuży jako wstęp dla właściwej argumentacji merytorycznej oraz metodologicznej. Rozprawka O jasnym i niejasnym stylu filozoficznym wpisuje się metafilozoficzną dyskusję dotyczącą języka tej dziedziny, a także – co jest pomijane w opracowaniach – w debatę z pogranicza epistemologii, filozofii umysłu i języka nad problemem konceptualizacji w myśleniu i komunikacji. Uwagi do stanowiska Twardowskiego, że niejasność stylu filozoficznego świadczy o niejasności myśli filozofa, przedstawiam w trzech etapach. Dyskutuję tezę Twardowskiego, że myślimy w słowach, oraz dwie tezy Davida Einhorna: że przedmiot wymykający się konceptualnemu ujęciu nie może być przedmiotem poznania, a słowa są jedynym dostępem do myśli.
