Artykuł próbuje ukazać konieczność uwzględnienia metafizyki i historii dla właściwego ujęcia pojęcia suwerenności jako kategorii etycznej. Zaczyna od zwrócenia uwagi na obecność jakichś założeń metafizycznych w każdej koncepcji etycznej. Następnie wskazuje na fakt, iż uchwycenie owych założeń metafizycznych wymaga odwołania się do historii. Owo podejście historyczne nie jest jedynie ukazaniem historycznego kontekstu i przebiegu rozwoju danego pojęcia, ale wynika z samej natury pojęć etycznych. Na taki stan rzeczy wskazują rozważania Alasdaira McIntyre’a zawarte w Dziedzictwie cnoty, w którym uprawia on coś, co sam określił jako filozoficzna historia. Podobne, choć o wiele bardziej wyartykułowane podejście stosuje Charles Taylor, rozwijając swoją koncepcję źródeł moralności. Najbardziej systematyczne ujęcie podejścia historycznego prezentuje jednak Hans Joas, opracowując metodę afirmatywnej genealogii, którą stosuje do koncepcji praw człowieka. W podsumowaniu artykułu zostaje pokazane, w jaki sposób koncepcja źródeł moralności Taylora może zostać zastosowana do ukazania zmian w rozumieniu suwerenności jako kategorii etycznej. The article is an attempt to show the relevance of metaphysics and history to gain a proper understanding of the notion of sovereignty as an ethical category. It begins by pointing at the presence of certain metaphysical assumptions in each ethical theory. It further demonstrates the fact that the mere grasping of those metaphysical assumptions requires a reference to historical narrative. The historical approach does not consist in mere presentation of the historical context and the development of a given notion, but it is a consequence of the very nature of ethical notions. An adequate account of this fact gives Alasdair McIntyre in his After Virtue, in which he gives an example of what he calls philosophical history. A very similar, even though much more articulated, approach is adopted by Charles Taylor in his notion of moral sources. Although the most systematically elaborated conception of the historical approach is presented by Hans Joas in his affirmative genealogy, a method applied by him is the concept of human rights. In the concluding section, the article sketches how the Taylor's notion of moral sources can be applied to demonstrate the evolution of the understanding of sovereignty as an ethical category.
