W artykule porównane są dwa modele kierowania Kościołem, które w Kościele katolickim co najmniej od Soboru Watykańskiego II stoją wobec siebie w pewnym napięciu. Model Communio strukturyzuje cały Kościół wychodząc od Kościoła lokalnego; Model Iurisdictio (bądź też hierarchiczny) wychodzi od prymatu jurysdykcyjnego biskupa Rzymu. Wraz z Walterem Kasperem autor artykułu opowiada się za syntezą Iurisdictio oraz Ordo, co pozostaje jeszcze zadaniem do wykonania na trzecie chrześcijańskie tysiąclecie. Tematem Ekskursu jest teoria eklezjologiczna Josepha Ratzingera, w ramach której w odniesieniu do relacji między papieżem a episkopatem można zaobserwować rozwój od podkreślania kolegialności w kierunku świadectwa pojedynczego biskupa.

The article compares two models of church leadership that are in certain tension in the Catholic Church since the Second Vatican Council at least. The Model of "Communio" structures the whole church, starting from the local Church. The Model of "Iurisdictio" (hierarchical) comes out of the legal primacy of the Bishop of Rome. The author of this article, together with Walter Kasper, advocates the synthesis of Iurisdictio and Ordo, which remains the task to be performed in the third Christian millennium. The theme of the appendix is the ecclesiological theory of Joseph Ratzinger, in which we can observe the development from the emphasizing of collegiality in the direction of testimony of a single bishop in the relationship between the pope and the episcopate.

Der Artikel vergleicht die zwei Modelle der Kirchenleitung, die in der Katholischen Kirche spätestens seit dem Vaticanum II mit konziliarer Autorität in Spannung zueinander stehen. Das Modell der Communio strukturiert die Gesamtkirche von der Ortskirche her; das Modell der Iurisdictio (oder der „Hierarchie“) geht vom Jurisdiktionsprimat des Bischofs von Rom aus. Der Verfasser plädiert mit Walter Kasper für eine Synthese von Iurisdictio und Ordo als eine noch zu leistende Aufgabe für das dritte christliche Jahrtausend. Ein Exkurs beschäftigt sich mit Joseph Ratzingers ekklesiologischer Theorie, in der im Blick auf das Verhältnis von Primat und Episkopat eine Entwicklung von der Betonung der   Kollegialität zum Zeugnis des Einzelbischofs festgestellt werden kann.
