Artykuł jest wprowadzeniem w teologię jedności Kościoła. Ukazuje spektrum współczesnej refleksji nad przymiotem Kościoła wymienionym w Symbolu Nicejsko-Konstantynopolskim (credo in unam Ecclesiam). Refleksja ta obejmuje kategorie biblijne, zwłaszcza ideę koinōnia/communio, podkreśla trynitarne podstawy jedności Kościoła, a także jej konkretne środki – więzy jedności. Wśród tych środków jedności zwrócono szczególną uwagę na węzeł wiary, sakramentów oraz zwierzchnictwa kościelnego, zwłaszcza powszechnej posługi na rzecz jedności chrześcijan. Poszczególne Kościoły (wyznania) mają różne wizje jedności, ale i te koncepcje stanowią przedmiot dialogu ekumenicznego. Najnowszym ekumenicznym stanowiskiem na temat Kościoła, w tym jego jedności, jest dokument Komisji Wiara i Ustrój Światowej Rady Kościołów pt. Ku wspólnej wizji Kościoła (opublikowany w 2013 r.). Kościoły chrześcijańskie biorące udział we współczesnym dialogu ekumenicznym mają świadomość tego, że jedność Kościoła jest rzeczywistością daną i zadaną, jeszcze niepełną i niedoskonałą, niejako „w drodze”. W tym sensie mogą wyrażać swoje spero in unam Ecclesiam.

The article is a topic outline of the theology of the Church’s unity. It shows the spectrum of contemporary reflection on this  attribute of the Church mentioned in the Nicene-Constantinople Symbol (credo in unam Ecclesiam). The reflection includes biblical categories, especially the idea of koinōnia/communio, emphasizing the Trinitarian basis for unity of the Church, and its concrete means – bonds of unity. Among these means of unity, particular attention is paid to the bond of faith, the sacraments and ecclesiastical governance, notably the universal ministry of Christian unity. Individual Churches (denominations) have different visions of unity, but also these concepts are the subject of ecumenical dialogue. The most recent ecumenical vision on the Church, including its unity, is the document of the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order, Towards a Common Vision of the Church (published in 2013). Christian Churches involved in the contemporary ecumenical dialogue are aware that the unity of the Church is a reality given and set, yet incomplete and imperfect, so to speak "on the way". In this sense they can express their spero in unam Ecclesiam.

Der Artikel ist eine Einführung in die Theologie der Einheit der Kirche. Es wird das Spektrum der zeitgenössischen Reflexion über dieses im Nicäno-Konstantinopolitanum (credo in unam Ecclesiam) enthaltenen Attribut der Kirche. Diese Reflexion umfasst biblische Kategorien, vor allem die koinōnia/communio-Idee, betont trinitarische Grundlagen der Einheit der Kirche sowie konkrete Mittel bzw. Bande der Einheit. Unter diesen Mitteln der Einheit wurde eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf das Band des Glaubens, der Sakramente und der kirchlichen Obrigkeit, vor allem, des allgemeinen Dienstes für die Einheit der Christen, gelegt. Die einzelnen Kirchen (Denominationen) sehen die Einheit unterschiedlich, jedoch bilden diese verschiedenen Konzepte den Gegenstand des ökumenischen Dialogs. Die jüngste ökumenische Stellungnahme über die Kirche, darunter auch über seine Einheit, ist das 2013 herausgegebene Dokument der Kommission Glaube und Kirchenverfassung des Weltkirchenrates unter dem Titel Die Kirche: Auf dem Weg zu einer gemeinsamen Vision. Die christlichen Kirchen, die am gemeinsamen Dialog teilnehmen, sind sich dessen bewusst, dass die Einheit der Kirche eine geschenkte und aufgegebene Wirklichkeit ist, eine noch nicht erfüllte und deswegen unvollkommene Wirklichkeit, gewissermaßen ein "Unterwegs-sein". In diesem Sinne können sie bekunden: spero in unam Ecclesiam.
