Pytanie o teologię to w istocie pytanie o poznawczą rolę wiary, wzajemną relację wiary i rozumu oraz kulturowe, społeczne i egzystencjalne skutki przyjęcia bądź wykluczenia wiary w procesie poznawczym (naukowym). Rozwijając się w przestrzeni myślenia, teologia poszukuje argumentów rozumowych na rzecz Boskich odpowiedzi na egzystencjalne pytania. Problematyce tej – jako szczególnie aktualnej i ważnej dla współczesnej cywilizacji – wiele uwagi poświęca w swoich publikacjach i nauczaniu J. Ratzinger/Benedykt XVI. Uczy, że wiara uwalnia rozum (czyni niezależnym, niezideologizowanym), otwiera go na prawdę, której poznanie jest naczelnym celem wszelkiej aktywności naukowej. Istotnym warunkiem teologicznego poznania jest uznanie pierwszeństwa daru, łaski samego Boga, który poprzez swoje słowo i działanie daje się poznać. Ostatecznie ma to sens chrystologiczny: Syn zna Ojca i chce objawić Tajemnicę Boga. Teologia jako scientia fidei ma potencjał, by nadawać działaniom poznawczym charakter relacyjny i holistyczny, a tym sprawiać, że mają one sens wykraczający poza doraźną użyteczność. Wierna Kościołowi teologia służy rozwojowi świata i człowieka w najgłębszym rozumieniu tego słowa – prowadzi ku zbawieniu, spełnieniu w Bogu samym.

The question about theology is, indeed, the question about the cognitive role of faith, a mutual relationship between faith and mind, as well as cultural, social and existential consequences of accepting or eliminating faith in the cognitive (scientific) process. While developing in the space of thought, theology seeks rational arguments speaking in favour of God's answers to existential questions. In his publications and teachings J. Ratzinger/Benedict XVI gives much attention to these issues, as they are particularly topical and important for the contemporary civilisation. He teaches that faith releases the mind (makes it independent, non-ideologized), opens it to the truth, the learning of which constitutes the key objective of all scientific research. Recognition of the priority of gifts, God's grace, who makes Himself known through his Word and actions is an important pre-requisite for theological cognition. Ultimately, it has a christological sense: Son knows His Father and wants to reveal the Mystery of God. As scientia fidei, theology has got potential to give relational and holistic character to cognitive actions, thus made them acquire sense transcending their temporary usefulness. Theology, faithful to the Church, contributes to the development of the world and men in the deepest meaning of the word – it leads to salvation, finding fulfilment in God Himself.

Die Frage nach der Theologie ist im Grunde genommen eine Frage nach der erkenntnismäßigen Rolle des Glaubens, nach der gegenseitigen Beziehung zwischen Glauben und Vernunft sowie nach der kulturellen, gesellschaftlichen und existentiellen Folgen der Annahme bzw. Ablehnung des Glaubens im (wissenschaftlichen) Erkenntnisprozess. Bei ihrer Entfaltung im Raum des Denkens sucht die Theologie nach vernünftigen Argumenten bezüglich der göttlichen Antworten auf existentielle Fragen. Dieser Problematik – als besonders aktuell und wichtig für die heutige Zivilisation – schenkt eine große Aufmerksamkeit in seinen Veröffentlichungen auch J. Ratzinger/Benedikt XVI. Er lehrt, dass die Vernunft vom Glauben freigesetzt (unabhängig, nicht ideologisch gemacht) wird, geöffnet für die Wahrheit, deren Erkenntnis die wichtigste Aufgabe aller wissenschaftlichen Aktivität ist. Eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für die theologische Erkenntnis ist die Anerkennung des Vorrangs der Gabe, der Gnade Gottes selbst, der sich durch sein Wort und Wirken erkennen lässt. Letztendlich hat dies den christologischen Sinn: der Sohn kennt den Vater und will das Geheimnis Gottes offenbaren. Als scientia fidei hat die Theologie das Potential, den Erkenntnisaktivitäten einen relationalen und holistischen Charakter zu verleihen und damit auch einen Sinn, der über die vorläufige Nutzbarkeit hinausreicht. Eine Theologie, die der Kirche treu ist, dient im tiefsten Sinn des Wortes der Entwicklung der Welt und des Menschen – führt zum Heil, zur Erfüllung in Gott.
