The article is devoted to toponymic surnames from the territory of the former 'komornictwo' of Jeziorany in Warmia during the 17th and 18th centuries. Analysis was conducted with the goal of indicating the linguistic and formal character of surnames that developed from toponyms. Within the two basic classes, i. e., Polish surnames and German surnames, surnames were distinguished that developed as a result of transonymization and derived morphologically. Analysis was also conducted in the contest of historical research on the colonization and settlement of southern Warmia. Taken into account in the classification was the location of the places named by the motivating place names: surnames were distinguished from place names noted in the territory of Warmia, in other parts of East Prussia, and those not noted in the territory of East Prussia. Analysis of surnames from the perspective of geographical location of places named by potential derivational bases indicates that Warmian toponyms could participate in the creation of 12.6% of the total of toponymic surnames. Toponyms designating objects located in other regions of East Prussia could have motivated about 25% of the surnames. Analysis of the surnames from a structural perspective indicates that Polish surnames most often developed via morphological derivation, whereas German surnames developed via transonymization.
