The paper covers the genesis of the University of Zielona Góra and its functioning between 2001 and 2007. The content includes such areas as the organization of scientific and educational activity (based on faculties, departments, institutes and units) along with the changes it has been subjected to; the authorities and systems of management; the scientific and teaching staff, its development as well as the influence it exerts over categorization and the authority of the departments to grant doctoral and postdoctoral degrees, and the categories those departments are granted. Furthermore, the paper discusses the development of various fields of study (including the engineering and on-line environmental protection ones) and changes in specialisations; the evolution of the recruitment policy - from an increase in the limit of admissions to its gradual decrease and lowering the number of part-time students (while slightly increasing the number of full-time ones); forms of student initiatives (organizational, artistic, sports and the ones in clubs). Other issues raised include the three-level structure of studies: granting Bachelor's degrees, then Master's degrees (initially uniform, later two-level, based on the ECTS, the flexible system of education, the internal system of quality, the programs of student mobility MOST and MOSTECH, vocational apprenticeship and accreditation), and doctoral degrees along with their development. The subject matter also includes different forms of scientific activity such as individual, supervised and special research projects, scientific conferences (including international ones), books, parts of books, articles in the magazines and journals on the 'Philadelphia List', scientific periodicals (including international ones), international scientific cooperation (within the frames of international and bilateral arrangements) concerning, e.g., research programs of the European Union, academic associations and the Science Festival. The paper highlights the role of various interdepartmental units: the Department of Foreign Languages, the Department of Physical Education and Sports, the University Library (including the digital and specialist collections), the Teacher Training Centre, the Youth Counselling Centre, the Computer Centre, the University Network (with access to the wireless Internet), the Academic Radiostation Index, the University Press, the Centre for Enterprise and Technology Transfer, the Academic Enterprise Incubator.
