Being different - a feature discriminating from a given group - often is a barrier in interpersonal relationships. Someone different is very often socially excluded. People with disabilities are especially vulnerable to this process. In order to change this situation integrative teaching has been introduced to Polish schools. This paper tries to answer the question if the disabled student is treated as someone different, a stranger in the integrative class. In the search for the answer it was helpful to select the category of otherness, that was investigated in the interdisciplinary approach. Widely described problems of being different became the key to understanding the phenomenon of the disabled student in the school environment.
