Globalisation, individualisation, modernisation, urbanisation and housing in Hungary

In Eastern Europe the process of globalisation is inseparable from the processes of modernisation, individualisation, urbanisation and (re)capitalisation. All these processes have begun earlier, but the change of regime made them speed up radically, so today these social-cultural changes are very good objects for analysis. The semiotic analysis can distinguish these fields: some of the above-mentioned changes are interpretable as changes of the value system, others as indices of progress/backwardness, and so on. We have studied these socio-cultural changes on the territory of housing, principally on the changing world of objects in the interiors of middle class flats. From this point of view we have analysed the most representative changes of the last decade in Hungary. Our main topics were the following ones: the signs (and steps) of multiculturisation in the world of objects, (especially the spread of signs and symbols of North-American culture); the spread and the changing meanings of Far-Eastern symbols; the signs of individualisation in the use of different rooms (bedroom, bathroom, children's room); the role of computers in the new forms of housing as the signs of modernisation; the changes of the use of balconies and gardens as signs of changing relations to public sphere; and the changing role of books in flats that is the changing role of the culture in a narrow sense (as results of the system change); the global fashion of 'spectacle flats'; the signs of urbanisation (modernisation) in the housing of villages; and the counter-tendency: the revival of village as a movement of intellectuals (and as a symbol of anti-globalisation).
