The article is aimed at elucidation of large family discourses in Ukraine. In the official discourse realized in demographic strategies and family policy a large family is considered as a doubtless value and the “basis of state development”. The theory and practice contradict sometimes this ideological point, since the family structure (its content and quantity of children) are often used as the basis of the categorization as really and potentially “unfortunate”. The efficiency of social policy in the support of large families is also hampered by the daily discourse of a large family as “social irresponsibility”. It is concluded that contradictions between the above discourses can hardly be removed by propaganda of a large family and by arrangements of its “social protection”. A real condition for raising the large family status is to form people’s trust to the state, their confidence in the future that is a necessary condition for forming orientations for bearing two and more children.
