The author of the study employs the perspective of Czech structural aesthetics to comment on Jürgen Habermas’s critique of Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction. Following Roman Jakobson, Habermas relies on a hierarchical model of linguistic functions and criticizes Derrida’s over-generalization of the poetic function to all types of discourses. Habermas evaluates this as Derrida’s attempt to level the boundaries and distinctions between philosophy and literature. The study points out the inadequacy of Habermas’s critique and shows that Derrida’ s approach corresponds to the contamination model of functions originally proposed by Jan Mukařovský.
