Artykuł zawiera wnikliwą analizę kulturowych, politycznych i ekonomicznych aspektów fenomenu osiedli grodzonych w Królestwie. Przedstawione studium wybranego przypadku opiera się o materiały etnograficzne zebrane podczas dwu-letnich badań nad zmilitaryzowanym i ogrodzonym osiedlem zachodnim, znajdującym się w mało zurbanizowanej części kraju. Autorka sięga do wiedzy socjologiczno-antropologicznej, aby zrozumieć środowisko w jakim żyją opisywani ludzie. Wyniki badań zawierają informacje o cechach psychologicznych przedstawicieli kultury zachodniej, mieszkających i pracujących w Arabii Saudyjskiej. Motywem przewodnim są rozważania nad rozkładem władzy i zasobów materialnych w dzisiejszym społeczeństwie muzułmańskim, w oparciu o zamożność, kulturę i podziały rasowe.

The article analyses the cultural, political and economic complexity of gated communities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The main study case presented here is based on ethnographic materials gathered during a 2 year research period in a western, gated and militarised compound, situated in a remote part of the country. The outcome of the study contains an in-depth insight into the psychological profiles of western people who live and work in Saudi Arabia and also allows the author to use sociological and anthropological knowledge to achieve a deeper understanding of the environment these people live in and of the power distribution in modern Islamic society based on wealth, cultural and racial division.
