The situation in Europe at the turn of the 15th century was for several decades of the 20th century perceived by historians as the era of ‚crisis‘. The continuous search for the symptoms of this crisis coined the terms such as the ‚crisis of the 14th century‘, crisis of the late Middle Ages‘, ‚crisis of feudalism‘ or ‚the first crisis of feudalism‘. This study recapitulates evolvement of the subject that has been enriched in the recent years by the dimension of ecology in general, more specifically by the aspects of climate change. The article demonstrates that an application of this approach to the epoch of the Luxembourg rule is rather unsubstantiated. Projection of these universal trends onto the development of arts around 1400 is incorrect, since art evolved primarily in accordance with its immanent principles. In other words, the development of art did not simply mirror the changes in society, but implemented them through a much more complex process.
