Music accompanied and has accompanied the military since ancient times. Over the centuries instruments used by military bands has undergone changes but the canon regarding the composition of the orchestra was founded in France in the eighteenth century. The first international competition of military bands took place in 1867 at the World Exhibition in Paris. Military bands from France, Austria, Prussia, Russia, Bavaria, the Netherlands, Spain and Baden participated in this competition. The creation of the Polish Army of reborn Republic in 1918 was accompanied by the creation of the military bands. In 1920 in the Ministry of Military Affairs a music office was created and it was supposed to supervise the orchestras in regiments of infantry, artillery and cavalry. After the war for the borders of the Second Republic, Ministry of Military Affairs issued more rules regarding the existing orchestras and soldiers participating in these bodies. In 1923 Ministry of Military Affairs ordered organizing music competitions for orchestras at Corps Districts level. The winning bands took part in the competition competing for the championship of the entire army. After the end of the elimination in September 1923 in Warsaw the final competition of military bands took place. First place was granted to the orchestra of the 20th Infantry Regiment of Cracow under the direction of bandmaster Juliusz Szreyer.

Одновременно с формированием частей Польской армии Польской Республики в 1918 г. создавались также военные оркестры. В 1920 г. в Министерстве военных дел был создан музыкальный отдел, в обязанности которого входило обеспечение деятельности оркестров в пехотных, кавалерийских и артиллерийских полках. После завершения сражений за установление границ Польской Республики Министерство военных дел утвердило очередные положения о существующих оркестрах и служащих в них солдатах. В 1923 г. Министерство военных дел распорядилось организовать музыкальные конкурсы оркестров на уровне корпусных округов. Победители должны были участвовать в конкурсе за первенство в армии. После отборочного этапа в сентябре 1923 г. в Варшаве состоялся финал конкурса военных оркестров. Первое место занял оркестр 20-го пехотного полка Краковской земли под управлением дирижера Юлиуша Шрейера.
