The articles covers the World War II events taking place on the eastern front during the period 1943-1945 as described in the Polish press from the 70s of the twentieth century including the memories and accounts Polish Army soldiers subordinate to the Communists. Published reports and the memories were subjected to a thorough analysis by the censorship operating during the period to show only the positive features of the Polish-Soviet fraternal help provided by the Red Army and the strong bond developed between the Polish and Soviet soldiers during fights on the eastern front. Presented extracts derived from the accounts and memoirs of lower rank soldiers who did not deal with the political issues and only tried to break free from the Soviet “paradise” (GULAG) to return to their homeland. After the change of regime in Poland they were judged as traitors and communists, despite the fact that a number of soldiers (especially from the 1st Army of “People’s” Polish Army) were not supporting the regime and the army was treated as a last resort as well as a way to run away from Soviet captivity. The author claims that one should appreciate and respect their role, involvement in fighting, suffering and dying for Poland.
