The author of this article discusses the state of research and the most important literature on the military garrisons in the Polish territories in the first half of the 20th c. Therefore, the article presents the definition of a military garrison and indicates the main issues related to its organization and functioning, including the problems of the garrisons’ influence on the economy and cultural life of their respective local societies. In the author’s interest there are garrisons of the occupying powers, mainly Russian Army, and the garrisons of the Polish Army of 1918-1939, which have so far been most extensively researched and described in the Polish historiography. Indicating the differentiated historiography, the author is presenting its strengths and – often very significant – deficiencies. Furthermore, the author presented the most important research postulates regarding the scope and main directions of research on the history of military garrisons located in the Polish territories in the 20th c.
