The purposeof this article is to present a description of a concise dictionary of Afrikaans words and expressions compiled by Prof. Dr. A.F. Teurlinckx (1918–1999) over a period of several decades and provided by him with Dutch annotations and English equivalents. Teurlinckx, who grew up in Antwerp and received his Licentiate in Art History and Archaeology from the University of Ghent, was after his emigration to South Africa inter alia Professor of Art History at the (then) University of Orange Free State. The content of the dictionary is illustrated by means of exemples of fixed or idiomatic expressions, typically South African terms denoting names of groups or referring to historical events, words from popular culture and life in the countryside (e.g. culinary and transport terms, and the names of children’s games), the naming of animals, diseases and plants, figurative and emotive language, borrowings and neologisms, and so-called ‘false friends’.
