Dogberry in Much Ado About Nothing, Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mrs Quickly in The Merry Wives of Windsor, they all produce various slips of the tongue, including malapropisms. Czech translators may use the same malapropism (defect – defekt), a different malapropism (suspect – degenerovat), or use some other stylistically marked expressions. They may also translate the English malapropism with a Czech neutral term or replace a neutral term in English with a Czech malapropism. Mrs Malaprop produces only malapropisms – and no other types of substitution – and that makes her speech less natural. It is only a satirical play, after all.
