Fortified architecture and particularly fortifications are still not very popular with Polish historians as a research field. One of examples of marginal treatment is history of Chełmno Stronghold. After World War II there were some attempts at describing its history, but they restricted to several minor mentions in literature. Only at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries the expand of the contemporary state of research has been brought. The significant lack of study has been filled in partly by Krzysztof Biskup and Wiesław Bąk. They both studied this issue and presented the results at that time. This article is an attempt to describe and discuss the fundamental literature and the current state of research on history of twentieth-century Chełmno's fortifications. This outline of Chełmno Stronghold's historiography includes all the most important studies and works and points out the most valuable among them, using the chronology criterion. The last part of this study is devoted to the most necessary research needs on the field of fortifications in Chełmno. The lack of a comprehensive academic monograph, being an overall picture of intended fortified architecture in Chełmno turns out as a basic issue, more than anything else. Full analysis of fragments of Chełmno fortifications' history remain an open scope for research activity as well.
