The Polish Marime Museum (Centralne Muzeum Morskie – CMM) is the largest centre in Poland documenting and popularising Polish maritime history; established in 1960, it now has eight departments. In Gdańsk the Museum comprises a complex in the very heart of the mediaeval port on the Motława, composed of the Żuraw (Crane), the Granaries on Ołowianka, the ship-museum SS ”Sołdek” and the modern Maritime Culture Centre opened in 2012. The Gdynia section of the Museum is the owner of the legendary White Frigate, i.e. the sail ship ”Dar Pomorza”, while on Hel it supervises the Fisheries Museum. Successive departments are the Vistula River Museum in Tczew and the Vistula Lagoon Museum in Kąty Rybackie. Numerous forms of activity conducted by the CMM, which archivises and promotes assorted domains connected with maritime economy and trade, boat and ship building, sailing and navigation across the ages, include also maritime education whose prime purpose is to reach children and adolescents.Recent years provided numerous opportunities to finance the promotion of the Polish maritime heritage both at home and abroad. The chief reason lies in the participation of the CMM in such EU projects as MarMuCommerce and Seaside. Furthermore, the Museum obtained funds from the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism for building the Maritime Culture Centre, involving considerable sums intended for promoting the investment. The initiated undertakings produced not only traditional forms of promotion such as printed matter, gadgets, advertisements in the media or the participation of the CMM in the Tour Salon in Poznan and the ITB Berlin. First and foremost, they made it possible to hold events addressed to a wide public, with the CMM and other European maritime museums proposing an unconventional presentation of their resources, knowledge and accomplishments. Take the example of a display of boat building at Hanse Sail Rostock and at the time of the Sea Festival in Gdańsk as well as the multimedia exhibition: “1 Sea 4 Stories”, on show in four South Baltic ports.
