Tourism economy has been evolving over the past decades and has become, in many countries, one of the fastest growing industries. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the relationship between the socioeconomic development of countries and the development of tourism industry. The paper presents selected economic, social, demographic, and political factors contributing to tourism development, such as: growth of wealth of societies, changing life expectancy, changing the amount of leisure time, degree of urbanization, development and use of means of transport, tourism and environmental policy and international integration. The analysis of the factors mentioned above showed that they are a strong incentive for the development of tourism industry and other areas that develop for tourism. Recent years have also shown that tourism industry is very sensitive to changes in economic conditions.
