The author, at the same time the head of this Department deals in brief with the history and growth of preservation laboratory discussing in detail its present equipment and apparatus. The activities of laboratory are covering the three basic areas, namely (1) investigations aimed at maintaining optimum conditions for storing the books, (2) fight against harmful bacterial flora through applying of preliminary quarantine and disinfection of collections, (3) wide range of preserving treatments applied to books, manuscripts and works of graphic art. In addition, the author lists the most important publications prepared by the Department workers.
