Busy with everyday problems, we often bring professional life down to resolving current issues. Concentrated on routine actions, we achieve routine victories. We also experience defeats. However, rarely do we fin d the time for deep reflection over the causes o f these victories and defeats. There is also not enough time to think over the basic aims o f conservation undertakings. Even i f we succeed in coming to a temporary stop in our race, there is frequently not time to guide the process o f thinking to a satisfactory statement. Also, it is not often that someone creates for us an opportunity for a quiet profound exchange o f ideas in a competent group. Such an opportunity, as was the intention o f the organizers, was to be the conference Conservation on the Threshold o f the 2/st Century. The conference was to make possible an exchange o f ideas on the subject o f the aims o f protection and conservation o f historical heritage. In order to be aware o f the experiences we are entering the age to come with, a critical look is needed on the road covered in the 20th century. Contrary to certain views, no generation invsnts its culture, or the manner o f approaching protection and conservation o f historical monuments. We are only a link in the process o f development based on tradition modified by contemporary needs. Also, when negating tradition, we prove its existence. In this issue o f „Protection o f Historical Monuments", we are publishing some papers. The theses and reflections o f their authors are a recording o f individual views on the subject o f historical monument protection at the turn o f the two centuries in Poland. The editors do not share some o f the views, but we are publishing these in order to present the trends existing in the conservation o f historical monuments. We think that w ill also evoke discussion in the conservation circles. The editors w ill be glad to participate in this discussion by printing the material. We feel that the problem formulated in the title o f the conference is o f basic significance for the protection o f our heritage. The development o f science and technology, as well as the inevitable menaces accompanying this, require that we define anew out attitude towards historical legacy and determine its place in the life of societies in the coming centuries. The theoretical solutions in this sphere w ill determine the course o f action and development o f conservation techniques and methods. It is fortunate that the Ateliers for Conservation o f Cultural Property State Enterprise, on the fortieth anniversąry o f its activity, organized in Cracow ( on 22-24 October 1990) a meeting where it was possible to exchange views. The report is in the Chronicle. We hope that the thoughts expressed there w ill make us all realize that at times we should stop in our race for a while to ask ourselves: what are we going to pass on to our successors in the 21st century?
