In this article the importance of study of the views of Ukrainian publicmen and teachers of the second half of the XIX – the beginning of the XX centuries on national character of education and upbringing for the use in the context of further claim of Ukrainian national idea in modern spiritual space of Ukraine is grounded. It should be noted that period of the second half of the XIX – the beginning of XX centuries for the development of domestic pedagogical theory and practice became one of most productive because at this time in Ukraine in the area of theoryand practice of education and upbringing very perspective works were maked.From here fully naturally, that in the last ten years many Ukrainian researchers turnedtheir attention to the present pedagogical inheritance of the indicated historical period. It’s necessary to emphasize that many Ukrainian publicmen and teachers of the second half of the XIX – the beginning of the XX centuries (B. Grinchenko,M. Dragomanov, O. Kobilyanska, N. Kobrinska, P. Kulish, M. Pirogov, L. Ukrainka, I. Franko and others) devoted the proper attention to the problem of national character of education and upbringing. Importance of national character of education and upbringing was also marked by such writers as G. Vrecena, P.Grabovskiy, O. Pchilka, M. Kocyubinskiy,P. Zhiteckiy and others. On the basis of learning of domestic pedagogical legacy, that is the ideas of the most known members of domestic intelligentsia was found next reflection: • necessity of the use of folk traditions, study of folklore, history of Ukrainian people, literature; • stimulation of children and young people to self-education, acquisition of knowledge of both children and their parents; • scientific and methodological providing of national character of education(teaching in native language, use of Ukrainian textbooks, preparation of a teacher, who is able to teach and educate the children and youth according to interests of Ukrainian people). In the looks of Ukrainian publicmen and teachers in generalized wayis also reflected persuasion about the role of national education as the most important means of progressive public transformations and creation of Ukrainian state system.
